Since the last thread was getting to big to read I thought I would summerize it so people can easily read it more. A lot of good brands are being recalled and some people on the boards may feed their dogs the brand of food being recalled. A lot of companies are really keeping it hush, hush. The recall has expanded into kibble a little bit as well as treats. The recalls have been going on for over six weeks now. The FDA website is a little slow to report recalls and so I post the recalls as soon as I get them. The recalled foods in America and Canada mainly deal with tainted wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate (rice gluten). I will post more recalls as they come in. Remember, there are about 200 pet brands that have been recalled.

March 16, 2007
Menu Foods initiated a voluntary recall of all canned cat and dog food containing wheat gluten. The wheat gluten was tainted with melanonin. For about a whole month they kept expanding their recalls. The list keeps expanding and here is the link for the recall list. Menu Foods claims that food produced after March 6, 2007 is okay.

Schnucks expands wet food recall.
http://www.schnucks.com/foodsafety/recalls/20070502-a.html

Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Menu Foods is now expanding the recall to include cuts and gravy and select other products which do not include ChemNutra wheat gluten but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used at that plant, to the extent they have not already been subject to a recall, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. Menu Foods has received a report from a customer and has received study results, both of which indicate cross-contamination. This recalls expands to Canada and the U.S.

This is however not a recall but important to know.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. quietly stopped selling Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading in July, after customers said the products sickened their pets.

No recall was announced at that time, but Wal-Mart said in a statement Tuesday that customers who bought one of the products should return it to the nearest store for a refund.

you welcome. I'm just trying to make it simple for people to read. The list sure does tell a story. It seems that more and more companies started looking at their own food around april when it became known that rice protein concentrate was tainted. Also, a new debate is forming. The dog food company only has to write on the bag the ingredients that they themselves put in the food, any ingredient that the company they send the ingredients to be manufactured puts in doesn't have to be labeled on the bag. This is why so many companies are claiming that they didn't know American Nutrition put rice protein concentrate in all of their foods. Also Menu Foods is sueing ChemNutra. I bet American Nutrition is going to be sued for putting rice protein concentrate in food that the companies didn't want it.

This isvery helpful, Delta.  In light of what's been happening (and how long it's been going on), it's hard to keep up with the information--you've really organized all of the info nicely Tongue
Thank you for keeping us up to date !

thanks guys.  Big Grin I'll be sure to update the main post so it can still be in sync and I'll just post when there's another recall that way people will know. So far today it's all quiet on the open front. Generally it is quiet on the weekends. Since American Nutritioin is recalling products I'm expecting more recalls. Out of all of this Natural Balance is starting to be looked down upon because their reports saying they don't use this or that have been contradictory. They say that all their food is tested before and after production and that only Natural Balance staff and employees work in their warehouses, so then Natural Balance employees must have tainted their own food with rice protein concentrate.
I can tell you this much you can tell which dog foods are flying off the shelves. I went to www.petfooddirect.com and a lot of brands not on the recall list are sold out.

Just after the first recall, we couldn't find our food at the store (Newman's Own Organics), so we switched to Natural Balance Organics.  The dogs were still pooping with the same frequency (about 2/day each), but with less volume.  Since Natural Balance is now on the recall list, I took a list of foods that I got from this bored with me to the pet food store to pick the next brand.  Newman's Own Organics was back on the shelves with a different bag, but we didn't want to go back to that since there was a lot of waste.  We're now trying out Merrick.  So yes, even though none of our dog foods were recalled, its still has complicated our lives as we move from dog food to dog food to figure out what is available and what is good for our dogs.

Another good place to look for recalled  foods is the US Food and Drug Administration  at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html Click on 'Search Combined List of Recalled Pet Foods'. You can search by brand or type etc. Also at the bottom of that page is a download which will show you the entire list of every single product that has been recalled. It is now over 5600!!! The good thing about this site is that it doesn't come from the companies, so I believe it is being updated regularly.

I just read an article in today's paper about the use of melamine in animal feed in China.  The manager of one of the feed companies said in proper quantites it is not harmful to animals, and his costumers either don't know or aren't concerned about it--some even praise it's use.

Not only were hogs here in the US given feed that was tainted, but some farmers in Indiana received chicken feed  in early February that was contaminated as well Confused

Why are we buying wheat gluten from China anyway? Roll Eyes

There are now over 120 pet products being recalled. Menu Foods is doing another massive recall and has added some new recall foods. I updated the list. They have expanded the dates of their food. It's just getting out of hand to me. Don't they clean their machines after each process? I guess not.

Menu Foods has updated the recall list today. It's getting on my nerves big time. Don't they clean those machines, how did the contamination get in the food that didn't have wheat gluten that's mentioned. Also, there are reports of 8,500 pet deaths due all the recalls above. Although the FDA only admits 16 confirmed deaths still.  Roll Eyes

Thanks Delta!  This is really helpful!

You mentioned how you're going to update the previous thread with this information.  Maybe you can just add a post in that old thread to tell people to come here... that way you're not doing duplicate work.

How do you keep up with all this?  You're not working at Petsmart anymore, right?  In school and working now?

I just edited my last post in the old poll so they can come here for updates.
I don't work at PetSmart anymore. I miss my job, but I was working 36 hours a week and going to school full time. I am in school still full time and I do have a part time job at a hospital on the weekends.
I keep up with all of it because I have friends with lots of animals and I know you guys all have friends with lots of animals and I feel like I need to keep it updated to inform everyone in case a close friend is using tainted food. There has been tainted food since 2006 going into the Pet food industry. I monitor websites everyday in the morning, evening and night time, to make sure that there are no new updates. I also don't want to see anybodies doggie hurt in these recalls.

During the pet food recall stuff I've been helping a lot of people understand what the ingredients on their dog food labels mean and if they want to switch to a different dog food because they feel uncomfortable with what they are feeding I help them find another dog food that suits their budget and doggie needs. I've been researching pet foods for over two years now and I am able to read pet food ingredients and figure out if they truly are what they say they are. So with all these recalls I keep on top of them to figure out what's going on with the pet food industry and how it is affecting top quality dog foods and why.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU who have been putting in the information about the dog food recall!  Especially Delta for all your investigative work!

The brand I'm using right now, Natural Life Lamaderm dry, is not on the recall list for that company...just the canned food.

Again, thanks so much for the updates! Pleased

Again, thank you Delta for keeping up on this!
I didn't realize until I read an article in yesterday's paper that the wheat gluten wasn't subject to proper inspection because it was labled as a non-edible product when it was shipped--very sneaky Confused

Sorry if this video is a repost - I don't think I am up to date on the recall news, but I just saw it and it's very interesting - particularly with the CEO and his abrupt stock dump.  If reported items are true... how timely.  Not sure how reliable this source is.

To view the video:
http://www.clickondetroit.com/video/index.html
Click on Search tab and enter "recall food" for keyword
Video is the first one listed

Sorry, I can't figure out how to link directly... the link I first posted didn't work.

Well, you know what I'm not surprised about meat meal. I already knew what meat meal was. It can even be dogs or cats. I've scared people when it comes to certain ingredients.
animal digest is another horrible thing you don't like.

Yes, Delta, I've been meaning to thank you for awhile now for keeping us posted on the latest recalls.  This is all so scary.

I check Nature's Variety website every day just to be on the safe side. I dunno with all these recalls it's really scary. The FDA says that the food is now supposedly safe. I don't believe it.
