we had to bring casper to the emergency clinic last night. i had taken a look at his gums and they were white. the vet said it looked like he had hemolytic anemia. his red blood count was 20 where it should be 35-40. if it goes down to 15 he will need a blood transfusion. he is on some steroids now and the doc will check later if that brings his blood count back up. i do not know what is causing this. casper was ok up until yesterday morning. he vomited in the morning and we thought it was because he ran on an empty stomach. after a while he looked ok and wanted to play ball but when we threw it for him, he ran after it then just stood beside it. and then fell over. so we made him rest all day. he looked better by the evening although he kept looking at me with really sad eyes. so i decided to check him all over once more before we went to bed just to be sure and that was when i saw his gums. please send positive thoughts his way. he is still at the vet's right now. and in true casper style, the nurse said he was watching tv.

Oh my gosh, I hope he gets feeling better soon!  How terrible for him to have to spend time away from his family, and how terrible for you to have to spend time away from him.

He is such a sweetie!  Our best wishes and most positive thoughts are headed your way.  Keep us posted!

we just came back from the vet. casper is not doing well. his blood count has dropped to 12 and he is now getting a blood transfusion. the doctor said his chances are 50-50. his body thinks its allergic to his blood so his immune system is killing off his red blood cells. he looked so pale and was having trouble breathing. i cannot understand why this is happening. the vet said if he does not improve with the transfusion they will have to put him to sleep. i do not know what else to do for him.

thanx for all your well wishes. we are going to the vet again at 4 or 5pm to see casper. we are hoping that he will have some will to fight it if he sees us there. i wish we could just stay by his side every minute. he was so alive and playful just the day before. i cannot believe he is in such critical condition now.

So sorry to hear of this. All fingers and paws are crossed here and we're sending lots of positive thoughts for Casper to get better.  Maybe Shasta and Kola should go to the vet and donate blood!

we just called the vet. casper has developed a fever. he is alert though. he really is a trooper. they said we should just go to visit later on this evening. we are so worried. tomorrow is the anniversary of the very first day we saw him. he has not even been with us a year. we adopted him march 6. and he is supposed to celebrate his 4th birthday on march 1st. we were planning to take him to san francisco to celebrate. we are hoping for a miracle.

thanx for all the good thoughts. it is really good to know you guys are out there.
