Eskies are known for their intelligence... and I think alot of my "kids" bad behaviour comes from sheer boredom...  That said... I am buying a bike... and want to train them to jog along side (not for big trips...as I know their endurance is limited)  I'm also getting rid of my truck and getting  a "kiddie bike trailer" so I can load them inside as well and take them for trips...

(Hey, I'm Canadian.  What can i say?  Gas prices and the "green" thing have finally won me over... but boy, my kids like their truck rides!  So I figure this is the best substitute....)

Does anyone have any training suggestions???  I'm in the dark... and looking for any good ideas.  I do know that if I take the time/patience to train my furkids, it will well pay off in terms of eliminating bad day to day behaviour...

Thanks for any advice!

I know...gas is about $1.46/liter in Montreal. Oh well...in Greece or somewhere over seas it was $2.23/litre Friday morning.

For training your dogs, you have to condition him to it before doing longer distances, just like we would do if we got into a new sport. Watch also for the pad burns and dehydration. Don't go too fast either. I would make sure that his whole structure is ok before taking this demanding activity with my pet. If your dogs has knee, hips, etc issues (and you may not have noticed), the pounding and tear and wear could make it worse, and rapidly. Friends that I have who jog/bike with their dogs ended up with a few issues like that (but once solved were able to resume differently).

But running is a good exercise. Personnally, my dogs are not good enough at following me (they like to sniff, turn around, etc) so it would not be safe for them. We prefer jogging or trail hiking with them. Sometimes my husband would take on of them in-line skating. But again, if they pull hard and fast in another direction (or worse, run into your skates), it can be dangerous to you and the dog. So be careful in whatever sports you decide to opt.

There are 2 (at least that I know) tools to help you with it.

The Walkydog Bike leash and the Springer bicycle dog jogger.

You may look on the internet for the pros and cons of both.

Kooza is not a year old yet and he is not allowed to jog or do jumps (like agility) before as we do not want to damage his structure. Nuuk and Takoda's structure are not good enough for this type of sport. Just to say, yes it can be done. But like any other thing, your dog needs to be conditioned for it. So you do not end up injuring the dog = pain and vet bills. Smile

Have fun!

Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there!

Another thing to keep in mind is the outdoor temp.  Here's a good article on the Sled Dog Forum.  http://www.sleddogcentral.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11447  You have to remember that even though you can dress down to keep cool, a dog is always running with a fur coat on and can over heat easily.  Make sure to bring lots of water on your rides and a bowl.

Also, consider putting booties on them if you are running them on blacktop.  Barefoot might be great for keeping toenails trimmed down, but it can tear up their pads quickly.  And we all know how fun it is to walk barefoot on blacktop in the heat of summer...  Eek

You might want to run them with a harness rather than directly from a collar.  Or even have both hooked up.

Quite a while back, there was someone on the Eskie Board that had posted a pic of her dogs in front of the bicycle and I believe she had fashioned a pvc pipe as a bar to space the dogs out.  Maybe someone remembers that and can pull up the thread?

Good luck with the dogs and welcome to the board!  Big Grin

Ditto Ditto to Helene and Roben!

Yep, start slowly and build up their endurance.  Consider how much running they do now and start there. If they haven't run for two blocks straight before, then you don't want to start by biking them at running speed for six blocks.  You'll probably have to bike really slow for awhile until they get into condition.  And remember to give them breaks--don't bike every day.

Don't forget that mental exercise wears them out as well, and helps a lot with behavior problems.  Just learning things is tiring for them.  You can teach them anything you want, it doesn't have to be obedience stuff.  Figure 8 around chairs, sit in another room while you go knock on the door, get a kleenex when you sneeze, etc.

Nice to see that my instincts were on track...    thanks for all your comments!

Conditioning my dogs will be easy peasy... cause I need to condition myself as well!  Big Grin  Has anyone climbed on a bike after twenty years?  NOT EASY!!!

Billie likes to run.... on the grass... but of course being antisocial and having behavioural issues he can never be free to do his natural herding behaviours with other dogs...he's never leash free other than in our fenced yard...  so I think the training process with a bike will be good for him...  The training process itself, combined with a small short run would entertain him for ever...

Daisydog will be different.  Her joints hurt her... poor girl... but she is a "trodder"   she likes to just plow on and see the sites....  so she will love her normal walks.... and will LOVE the kiddie cart bike trailer...

Bille will be more of a challenge in the trailer....  he's goes CRAZY in the truck when he spots another dog....  the nylon  of the kiddie trailer will NOT hold up.  So another training challenge...

I'll keep everyone posted though as we proceed through the journey.  I think it will be a great thing for the entire family...  we all need more exercise and mental stimulation so the mutual training and the conditioning to the bike... will be good for all of us...

wish me luck.

Finally found the link on the board for the biking dogs!
http://forum.eskie.net/index.php/topic,18044.0.html
I like the 3 wheel bike she's using because you can get off and not have to worry about it tipping over and scaring the dogs.  Pretty neat idea.
