I am determined to train Lucy to sit, stay, come etc.... the basics.  The dog I grew up with wasn't trained at all.... he was a completely willful pom left to his own devices. As cute as he was, he wasn't always easy to be around.  Anyway, I don't want the same fate for Lucy.  She is already a calm, good natured puppy, but due to my husbands work schedule, and mine with our 4 young boys, puppy kindergarden is out of the question. So I'm going to have to train her myself at home.  I have absolutely no idea how to do this, so I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to start or could recommend a good book or dvd explaining how to train a puppy in obedience.

Lots of good books out there, but unless you know the basics of the physical applications then may be difficult to interpret /get right.  As any positive reinforcement training depends a lot on timing or you may be rewarding a behavior you're not attending.   If at all possible find someone (even if they come to your home) that can show you the basics.  May only take one or two full session to get you going and then you can take it from there.

I highly recommend puppy classes, more for the socialization then anything.  With other people and dogs in strange environments.  If you do a search on this Board, under Puppy or Training you'll find a lot of good training resources and suggestions

Must agree with Tammy.

I believe puppy class is the most important class you can get your dog to attend. This is where they get to meet a lot of "strange" things in a safe surrounding and you get to be taught how to do this or that the right way to avoid unpleasant situations down the road (like crate training hihi). I am certified to train dogs and I much prefer to be in an environment different from home, with other dogs (different colours and sizes) as well as other people handling her. If you could get Lucy enroled somewhere it would be the best thing you could do for her and your family. I know time is sometimes hard to find, especially if you have young children at home. A lot of puppy classes teachers will accept that the family attend (quietly) as they give a lot of information on the do's and don'ts to all. If you decide to use that route, please make sure it is based on positive reinforcement and that the teachers are in control of the class.

Lucy is still very young and fairly new to your household. Wait...it will be party time soon. Big Grin Big Grin

I have a friend who moved to Calgary and is into the dog training and dog show world and can ask her if she has a good school to refer you too. Maybe she could do in-home training as well if she is in your area. Would have to check that out. Most puppy classes that I know of are on weekends. During those classes, your puppy learns to interact with other dogs and humans. Is taught how to deal with different things happening in her big wide world. Teachers will give you tips on how to handle situations as they see you working with the dog (from crate training to potty training, to chewing, barking, etc.). Books and videos are excellent, but there is nothing like the real-life experience with a guide to help you out.

Good luck and keep us posted on your achievements.

Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there!
