I peeked out and checked on the dogs...they were all lounging on the porch and in the yard.  So I got ready for bed.  Went to call the dogs in and NO ONE came.  Called a couple of more times and still NO RESPONSE.  So I step out to see what is going on and I find two INSIDE of an Xpen intended to keep them OUT...they are jumping up and down in excitement trying to get out on one side, while if they had just turned to the other side, it was wide open.  One dog is never in the fray, so I know she has booked it to the other side of the yard.  As for #4, just as I catch sight of her behind a bush, she is POUNDING her 26 pound body into the fence on the 3rd try; she makes it through and is now bouncing around OUTSIDE the fence in hot pursuit of something which of course ran INSIDE the fence as she went out.  What the heck am I to do in my PJs with one dog on the loose, a mystery critter obviously heading my way and 2 in an unlocked Xpen that will soon figure it out??!

I decided I had to narrow down the odds so I grabbed the two in the Xpen and tossed them in the house and uninvolved one followed happy to escape.  Grabbed flashlight, leash, and slipped on some shoes and headed out.  Tanzy is still just outside the fence wanting back in so I know the critter is on my side.  First off, I want to know what we are up against so I slowly go across the yard, with my 1/2 charged flashlight. I finally see a huge lump...is it poop or critter???  A closer look shows it is a HUGE rat.  Apparently dead.  Good!!  head around to the gate on the other side to get Tanzy who has just remembered where the gate is and is charging around to get into the yard through the gate...I snagged her at the gate and put the leash on her and took her into the house.  A quick exam revealed no injury.

Back outside to dispose of the body and fix the fence.  Got the shovel only to find that the RAT is NOT DEAD.  It is now GONE.  Fine.  I still have to fix the fence.  I go over to get the aforementioned Xpen and guess who is climbing up the xpen????  You got it, MR RAT.  I grabbed the shovel and decided he had to die because it appeared his plan was to climb up the pen and then what...up the wall and into the house?  I don't think so!!  Anyway, I finished off what Tanzy had started and covered the hole in the fence with the xpen.  All told 1 hour later here I sit telling the tale.

Tanzy can't settle down...she wants to go back outside. The other dogs are already asleep, but like Tanzy, I am still a bit wound up.

What I want to know is why aren't my cats doing this job?  Why the heck are Tanzy & I out there doing their job?

The cats are not doing it because you guys ARE doing it.  And you make it so entertaining to watch as well!

Tongue  nothing like a good late night adventure to get you settled down for the night!  The cats know better than to mess with a rat, they're letting you tackle the problem Tongue 2

No worry about the rat in the house, Nancy. Remember: 90% of the houses in Texas have a resident king snake in the walls just for the purpose of cleaning up behind lazy cats!

According to my snake guy if you do not see mice/rat evidence in your home you most likely have a resident snake...and that is about 90% of the homes in the US (not just TX).  If you remember back when I moved in I told of the traumatizing story of the snake dropping into the house as I opened door?  Well, at least I KNOW I have a snake.  Of late though, I was beginning to wonder if he had vacated because there was evidence of a mouse at the back door.

My cats who were kindly bringing me many gifts daily only a few months ago, have brought NOTHING in quite a while.

If I have one, he needs to step up the pace because I'm finding mice droppings! And my two lazy house cats and three lazy house dogs aren't exactly over taxing themselves on mice hunts either!

Haha...I think I should change bed time to 30 minutes Before Dark.  Last week's adventure when I was locked outside at bedtime in my PJs and had to break in wasn't much better
