She hasn't been eating well for the last two weeks, hasn't eaten dog food, at all. But she has eaten some people food here and there, some cookies here and there. I am spending more money on food to try and get her to eat than I am for me and the rest of the gang combined!! But she is acting absolutely fine! I mean, she is old, so she isn't running around with the youngsters but she isn't acting any different than she was months ago. I took her to the vet today and she is jaundiced so it is definitely her liver, how severe we can't tell yet. They drew blood which won't be back until later tomorrow, put her on antibiotics just in case it is infection and she is going to spend the day there tomorrow and possbily the next day getting IV fluids. Then we will decide what step to take next. Possibly medications for liver function, possibly an untrasound. So please say a prayer for her if you do that kind of thing. She is keeping my stress level way up!!!

I hope Monkey feels better soon.  I will keep you in my thoughts.  How do you tell when a dog is jaundice?  I understand your stress, I'm feeling the same way with Shiraz's health issues, it is so hard.

The vet could tell by looking at the inside of her ears - where is should have been pinky pinky, it was sort of yellowy pink.  Plus Mandy, by looking closely at her eyes, could tell that the whites of her eyes were yellow.

So the news wasn't good. Monkey's liver function tests are very high, meaning her liver isn't working well and that there are liver cells dying. The vert gave me several options 1. Accept that she is sick, she is old, I don't want her to suffer and put her down (I said this was absolutely not an option right now because she is not acting sick!) 2. sonogram to see what the liver looks like (an option I like and am not ruling out but I have already spent about $300 and a sono would be another $300 and possibly do nothing more than tell me there is nothing we can do) 3. Refer me to an internist (I declined this, too, because what more can an internist tell me than my vet laready has without doing more tests and costing me alot more money?) and 4. Chinese medicine. I think she might have also given me #5 as to just see what happens with the IV fluids. So I chose #4 and #5. She will go back tomorrow for another full day of IV fluids and to see if there is any Chinese medicine that might help her.

So I guess at this point we are just hoping to keep her comfortable, happy and love her for as long as possible. I knew taking her into the vet that this was not be good news but that doesn't make it any easier. When i went to pick her up she made a bee line straight for the door, totally ignoring me. The tech was joking that she was mad at me. I then said something to the receptionist about coming back in the moring and apparently that is the first time Monkey noticed I was even there. She got all happy, smiling and wagging her tail and jumped up on me. She isn't ready to go yet. And I am not ready for her to go either. So keep those positive thoughts coming our way. Thanks!
