Hi Everyone

I have a problem with house training Moby. He does fine in the crate, y holds it overnight but whenever it comes to the day sometimes I can't even tell he has to go. He pees when he lies down!! He doesn't care if he gets wet. He doesn't do it all the time but how can I tell that he has to go if he doesn't ever bother to get up? My question is do you have any tips on how to teach him to try to tell me he has to go?  Usually I bring him before he has to go, but there are those weird times when he does that.

Thanks for all your help!!

how old is he? he might not even be aware yet.
it's up to you to get him out ever, maybe, half hour, 45 mins, etc. some dogs are really tough to housetrain, some are a breeze. i have had both.

search crate training on this board, and on google, and you'll get lots of repeated advice. it's the best way to do it.

Yup -- he may not even realize he has to go until it is too late.  Just assume he always has to go, and try to bring him outside on a regular schedule -- after eating, drinking, playing, and naps; every time you are about to leave or you just come home, plus at regular intervals of time when you're home during the day.

Is he in the crate when he is lying down and peeing?

Hi everyone. Ok so he is 4 months old and I have been house training him for 2 months. Let me tell you my schedule because maybe I am doing something wrong. I am no expert with dogs since this is my first one, that is why I ask so much. Anyway, so I let him out at 8am, he does pee and pooh. I give him water and then after 20 mins I feed him (he is not hungry just when he gets up). He plays in the house until 10am when I let him out for pee and then he goes in the crate for 3 hours ( I need to go to work). He is fine in the crate and doesn't cry and most of the times he falls asleep. At 1pm I let him out again, give him water and let him play around until 3pm when I again let him out and put back in the crate ( I have to work again). When I come at 6pm we go for a walk and exercise for around and hour (he has water available all this time) and I feed him dinner at 7:30pm. Let him play until 8:30pm (I remove water at 8pm). Take him out and crate for couple of hours to do house chores, dinner... We go to bed late so let him out again at 10:30pm until 12:30 which is the last time out before bed time. And he holds it through the night no problem. He doesn't pee in the crate. And he has never pooped in the house. He's been on this schedule since he turned 3 months, and he does fine when he is in the crate, the problem is when he is outside sometimes he does that, lie down and pee. Some other times he sniffs or stops playing all of a sudden, then I know he has to go, buy the other way I can't tell. I know he is young, I am just asking for tips on how to improve my training.

Sorry for my long email, I had to explain how I do it, after I read many books and web sites, please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

Thanks a lot!

The important thing is that the second he pees in the house, take him outside immidiately. Don't be mad or angry or scold him, simply take him out.

While outside, if he pees or poops... praise him like crazy. When you let him out you can also say something to him like "go pee".

That's it. He'll get it eventually.

Oh, and when you clean up the pee, use a neutralizing spray cleaner. I used "Nature's Miracle". It's also good if he gets poop on his butt hairs.

So he is outside -- i.e., in the yard -- when he lies down and pees?  Or, is he outside of the crate, but in the house, when he is lying down and peeing?  What does he look like when he does this? Lies on his belly, or is he rolling over?

Kiska used to pee sometimes immediately when she woke up from a nap.  She just couldn't hold it, and she was nearly lying down when she did it.  She stopped doing this as she grew up a little more and had more control.

It sounds like your schedule is working well -- it may just be that he's still a puppy and so he has these occasional potty quirks.  Keep up the schedule.  You might try a doggy doorbell as a way of teaching him how to ask to go outside. Or, if he continues to do this and have accidents, you could ask your vet.  He could have a UTI (both of mine had them as older puppies).

Hi Yukon

I mean outside of the crate inside the house, he is totally lying down on his belly. Anyway yesterday it look like we made progress I saw him sniffing and circling and asked him if he wanted to go outside and pointed at the door. He went and started scratching it. Luck? I don't know but I think is a good sign...

Thanks everyone for your input.

My pup Kodi is also 4 months.  He was doing great for a couple of weeks, asking to go out, showing definite signals, and then started regressing, mostly just peeing in the house.  The weirdest thing he just started is peeing on the sofa.  I have not been letting him get on the sofa and he gets chased off whenever he goes up there, so he must do it fast.  I'm trying to catch him at it so I could stop him and let him know it is not okay.  Who knows what's in the mind of a puppy?

I find that in the morning and evening when he is most active, he needs to go outside every 20-30 minutes.   When a bit younger it was every 10-15 minutes.

Thanks Kodi for your input. You know what it gets better. Soon after I posted he stopped peeing in the house, he doesn't ask for it he waits until is time to go out, I mean obviously I don't have him all day inside he gets out like every 3 or 4 hours.

Thanks and good luck with the sofas!!

@ around 4-5 months my Jake started doing the same thing. Almost as if it was a game, he would run jump, land peeing and spring board back to the floor and hide under the table. Now he has learned the "Go to your room" command. Sometimes he has an accident and goes to his room (Kennel) with out being told to, so then i have to search for his piddle spot while he looks ashamed in his room.  After learning he gets time outs in his room, he stopped with the couch, but now @ 7 months, he waddle walks and pees at the same time down the hallway or on his way to the door! I am baffled at what to do now. He does it every week 1-2 times. The rest the time he goes to the door and rings a chain of Christmas bells to go out side. Good luck with the couch. I have had decent luck with the sham wow, for my couch and carpet. Then the Natures Miracle ( We should be preferred customers by now. LOL)
