My dogs have never howled even though we've tried to entice them to by making the noises. How come some dogs do and some don't?

Is there a way to teach them?

probably, but trust me, you dont want to.

snoopy howls, and always has. we get him to by waiting till he barks then we just howl at him. seriously. and within seconds he's howling back. but a word of caution, watch what you wish for......  Roll Eyes

each of our dogs seems to have a different attitude towards howeling:

Dusty: Whenever she's excited there's a good chance she'll howel
GG:  Gives a throaty, drawn out howel sometimes when we come home or something major happens
Rev: rarely
Kittee: rarely

they all key off the pack reaction so if you start and keep up the howling I think they would eventually join in - be ready with rewards for when they do.

Mandy's dogs howl alot - one of them will get started and they all howl in unison.  It is quite noisy now but was interesting the first time I heard them.  Mine don't howl at all.

Mine only howls when my telephone ring, not the cell phone, the home phone, that has this weird ringtone.
if you search youtube for kiki, my user name is kittyangel2, you can find a video of her howling to the ringing of the phone, it's so funny, it's like she is singing. But otherwise no howling any other time.

I guess they are triggered by different things when it comes to holwing, you can try different ringtones on the phone, or sounds on video/audio etc.

Riley only howls once a year--at the Lilac Parade when all the fire trucks blow their sirens to start the parade.  Tongue  I've never heard him howl at any other time, even when he hears the same fire trucks on our local streets.  Kody woo-woos all the time, like a typical sammie, but I've never heard him howl like a wolf.

Luna howls at sirens going by.  I much prefer it to her barking.  Her barks are sharp and piercing and can be really painful in enclosed places.  Her howling is high pitch, but flatter so it doesn't hurt.  Yes, she has even howled while in the car when an ambulance went by.  I howl with her when I can Wink

Loki howls occasionally, but usually just barks along with Luna's howling.

Komite and Cleo will howl when they are isolated and have to poo.  Evania never does

I have heard that the M.A.S.H. theme song tends to trigger howling...

My Manning hates the MASH theme and will howl at it (I mentioned above that mine don't howl but Manning does at MASH).  I have a video in the video section of him howling at MASH.  That is the only time that he does and it is only when MASH is coming on - he doesn't mind it when it is going off.

When we come home from being out and the pack sees us pulling up, they start out barking at the living room window. Then Wally adds his "kennel chirp", which then gets a couple of the others to howl. By the time we reach the door, a good chunk of them are howling. We feel so wanted!

Atka never howled until we got Nuka. Now, it's a daily occurrence, and we can immediately hear how Atka wants to work Nuka up to a howl. It usually happens when they get excited about something, start barking, which morphs into a howl. Here are 2 videos we had taped:

This first one just has sound since I had taped them in the dark:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGagSa79Uwg

Then, I played that video on my laptop, and taped them howling at hearing themselves howl:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LpYVE4MfuQ

I got another video of them recently, but haven't put it up on YouTube yet. It can be entertaining, annoying, embarrassing, or endearing -- or all at the same time -- depending on where they are and what you're trying to do at the time. Smile

My boyfriend and I have been trying to get Doji to howl for years now.  I'm starting to think he either can't do it or just is too stubborn!

Great stories everyone :-)

I haven't had luck with teaching them howl yet but they can "whisper" pretty well. I'll have to take a video soon.

Never heard Chester howl yet, but he screams when a car goes by... as he's trying to chase it. Almost sounds like he's screaming "yeah..yeah..yeah.." real fast.

My last Eskie only howled when my Mom would call and she heard her voice. Only for my Mom, no one else.

Blizzard never howls - Yeti woo woos usually which then sets Blizzard to a high pitch bark - very annoying.   Evil
