There is a new brand of Dog and Cat Food on the market and it sounds really good.....  This is a quote from CTV News in Calgary

http://www.redmoonpetfood.com/

http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100722/CGY_gourmet_dog_100722/20100722/?hub=CalgaryHome

Alberta beef, locally grown vegetables, and whole grains, it's a gourmet feast but it's for your pet, not your plate.

At its Crossfield factory, RedMoon Custom Pet Food builds gourmet meals for cats and dogs, not people.

RedMoon claims to be the world's first company of its kind.

Pet owners use an online menu to choose from a wide variety of not just flavours, but health supplements which do everything from improve joint health to make animals breathe smell better.

Jason Bailey of RedMoon Custom Pet Food says, "Most pet foods out there are created on a bell curve so they are made to look after most pets 90 percent of the time. And we saw a real opportunity to look after individual pets."

The mixture is hand made to order, then shipped to the clients door.

Clint Bailey of RedMoon Custom Pet Food says, "Well I actually enjoy that because it seems like I can connect to that individual and actually it might sound weird, but I picture the animal just improving like my dog did."

RedMoon has been shipping pet food since February, but it's taken over 2 years to get from concept to kibble.

It's also taken a fair bit of money.

RedMoon caught a big break when it convinced Calgary based AVAC Limited to invest $700,000.

AVAC Ltd. is a not for profit company that invests Alberta tax dollars in companies it expects will benefit the provincial economy.

Ross Bricker, AVAC Ltd. President and CEO says, "If we are going to invest significant money, we want to see material benefit to Alberta."

The company's president says what sets it apart from other venture capitalists is the way it invests in ideas and people

Bricker says, "Venture capital as a rule invests later in the process. They tend to invest close to if not after you already have your first customer; whereas we will invest to help you get to that first customer."

For companies like RedMoon, those customers are starting to pour in.

Since its public launch in February it's opened a factory in the US.

The two biggest markets for its customer pet food are now Calgary and New York.

For more information you can contact visit RedMoon Custom Pet Food or AVAC Ltd. on their websites.

I am very interested to hear how it goes!  I am also curious about the supplements -- are these pills that you get to give them in addition to the food, or are they added into the food itself?

I believe that the supplements are added to the batch of food as it is produced on a per order basis.....

My package is coming via Canpar. It should be here by Friday. So let's see how it will go when we come back from vacation (leaving for 3 weeks as of next weekend).

I saw the video in the link above and they add powder to the kibble. They are mixed in a large tub and then packed to be ship to customer. So they say each order is customized to your own requested need.

For a 64 pound bag (in fact they ship 2 32lb bag) it comes to about $178 if you order high proteins. So it is not cheap. But I wanted to try for the fun of it.

Our food was delivered today!  I opened the Lamb bag of food and gave Jasmine a small handfull.  She scarfed it down like I hadn't feed her in a week.  I think that she really likes it!!  Big Grin Big Grin

The Cool thing is that you get to pick a name for your pet food and they put it right on the bag!

Yes it was received. But it got home the Friday we left for vacation (we missed the CanPar delivery truck and he came back on the Monday). So my cat sitter put the bag on my counter and we're waiting to get home next Friday to give it a try. We've been away for 2 weeks now. So it will have to wait for the test results. hihi

The ingredients in this food are no better than a lot of grain-inclusive foods out there.  This food seems to be WAY overpriced and this is coming from someone who buys dog food in Manhattan.  This food looks just like California Natural, Innova, or Natural Balance to me...

If it was grain-free I might understand but why pay so much for grain-inclusive?

Not everyone agrees that grain-free is the best for dog nutrition.  Personally, I have had my guys on food with grains and grain-free foods, and they have consistently done better on food with grains.  Every dog is different.

I agree that it is quite pricey.  But that is because it is customized -- you can choose which protein, the calorie and fat level, and supplements that are then baked directly into the food, on a per-order basis. You can't do that with other foods that come ready-made on the store shelf -- they have what they have in them, and if you want something different you have to buy a different food.  I can't tell you how many times looking at food I liked the ingredients, but it was too high calorie; or liked the calorie and protein counts, but not the supplements....  If you are very particular about what you want or need in a food, I think it is a good option to try.
