Hello everyone! New forum goer here from mid Pennsylvania. Currently do not have an eskie, but its a breed that my wife and I are definitely looking at for the future. I've done lots of reading up on various breeds and the eskie looks like the best fit for what we're looking for. We currently have two cats, one about 8 years old, the other 1 year. The younger one is almost a puppy himself, playing fetch when we throw his toys. Right now I'm still getting information on the eskie, especially trying to find a good place for a puppy when we're finally ready (probably in a couple months).

In the meantime, hello to everyone around here and I'm sure I'll be piping in more often with questions and eventually pictures of a new pup. Smile

Welcome - I'm sure you will find this forum very informative - and of course we want to see pictures when you finally get an eskie.

Hi fellow central Pennsylvanian! We are i Bloomsburg right now, whcih is about 45 min from Williamsport. In fact we just went to the library to borrow their wii games on Friday! (libraries here kinda sucks, have to go to williamsport for decent dvd/game selection).

We have our Kiki, for over 2 years now. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed as best as I can. If you ever want to meet a live adult eskie, we can do that too so you can see what they are like as an active adult. When I was deciding which dog to get, I settled on an eskie for many reasons, but one important reason is that the yare just SO cute! Not just as a puppy (eskie puppies can metl your heart in half a second, they are just unbelievably adorable), but they still remain cute and energetic and loving when they age. No matter where we go, people always turn their heads or stop to pet kiki, and compliment how cute she is. =) I think if you think you are a good match for this kind of dog, then you should definitely explore more and eventually settle on one. We are real happy with ours. One draw back, you have to fight real real hard not to over treat them as they are master of begging and with those faces, it is just incredibly hard to refuse. =) BUt anyway, PM me if you want to meet our kiki, we go to williamsport prob on a biweekly bases for the library and the wegman's. =)

Welcome to the board! Please take time to choose your Eskie. Watch out for puppie mills (who often sell to pet stores). Rescuing an Eskie is also an option. I found Chester on craigslist when he was 6 months old. I was afraid the owners may have sent him to the pound, so I rescued him. I was looking for an Eskie for months.

Welcome!  FYI - eskies are like potato chips; you can't have just one.....  I don't know how the rest resist!  Good luck finding your perfect Eskie - there are plenty of breeders here too who are more than willing to help with finding the right pup for you.

Well, after over a year of no posts here, I'm back again! Big Grin Had a busy past year changing jobs (finally back to being a chemist again) and settling in. Got a wonderful Christmas gift from my wife in the form of a fish tank, which is now home to two pair of sea horses; who are showing to be quite proficient at breeding amusingly enough! That said, I've kept reading and looking for eskies the whole time just in case 'the one' showed up at some point. Recently my wife has been hinting about getting a dog a little too, so I think the time might be approaching (finally!).

That said, I've been looking around and unfortunately see most eskie places, respected breeders (I definitely do not want to get one from a mill or anything like that) are well outside the area. I'm in mid-Pennsylvania, so anywhere in state or close to the border of surrounding states would be ideal. I want to go 'see' the dog before committing to a purchase though.. never know if I (or the dog) might just not 'click' with the way things are there or each other. Given the current two cats we have though, I think a puppy (or very young) is the way to go just to make sure the development & interactions can make sure to work out for the best. I'm not adverse to a rescue (been checking the local SCPA and surrounding ones) but no luck so far.

Anyone know of any puppies in the making, so to speak, or rescues in the young age range currently or upcoming? Not looking for so much a 'show' dog or even a breeding dog (will be spaying/neutering), so particular pedigrees aren't an issue, but would like a standard full (or close to full) eskie just to keep the bulk of the look and breed personality. Smile

Thanks for any help everyone! Getting excited already. Big Grin

I want to give another shout out for adopting a rescue.  Like Geno, we got our second Eskie off of Craigs list.  He was originally bought by a woman near us.  Her resident dog didn't take to him and she had to rehome him. . And we were able to meet him before committing.  He and Ziggy bonded immediately (it was really cute).  He is adorable, funny, smart.... and currently asleep at my feet.

Our first Eskie came from Petfinder. He is sweet, patient with the puppy, affectionate and also smart.  Both of our dogs were adopted at 3-4 months, so it is very possible to find a very young rescue.  And they are both purebred Esikes.  Might just take a bit of time.  Neither is a show dog, but their personalities are wonderful and they are both beautiful to us.

There are a couple of rescue organization online and they may have some dogs currently being fostered near you.  And Petfinder has Eskie's regularly being listed, as well as Craigs list.

Good luck in your search, and may you be as happy with your Eskie as we are with ours. They are a wonderful breed.

Sounds like you are doing all you homework before finding your furry friend. I found all three of my dogs on Petfinder, and they have been great dogs. Two of mine are eskie mixes, but they are all great family pets. Keep us posted. We love pictures!
