Are any of your senior eskies have dog demantia/Alzeheimer?

My Gigi is 17 this years, she started to show many neurological signs...and her vet just dx her with dematia.  Vet said there's a special prescription dog food for her condition.  Just wondering what's her prognosis.

Good day, everyone.

Fingers crossed - nothing so far.  Of course Angel is only 8 or 9.  Will you let us know what that special prescription dog food is?

Sorry to hear about Gigi.  Take good care of her.  We all get older, and nothing can stop it.  Give her lots of love.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that Gigi has dementia... but wow, 17?  It is wonderful that she has had so many great years! And hopefully with this prescription food, there will be many more!!

Thank you, Paula, Jasmine, Yukon for your compassion.

I sure will share the prescription food name when we get it from the vet....it is out of stock right now.

My husband and I just treasure every moment we have with her.  She gave us so much in the last 17 yrs...it is our turn to take good care of her.  We are also getting emotionally prepared, we know that her time is runny out.   Meanwhile, other than pacing a lot, and bumps into things often, she still runs like a young pup at times.

Thinking to adopt another Eskie...but, boy, they are expansive.

Enjoy your Eslkies and have a great day.

A Rescue Eskie (Reskie) might be a little more inexpensive and you would be giving an Eskie a second chance at being loved in a Fur-ever home.

Shiraz paces a lot and bumps into a lot, when this started we discovered she had gone blind quite suddenly.  She is 12.  The pacing has been regulated a bit since I put her on thyroid meds.  It is very difficult to watch.  Did the vet check those things?  Sorry to hear this is happening with Gigi.  I've learned in the last few months to keep Shiraz as comfortable as possible and keep her routine in place as much as I can.

Our Gracie (Sierra's High Society) had signs of dementia her last year of life at 15. Clearly she would forget where she was or what she was doing. She had some issues at times with the walking in circles but if you called her name she would seem to come out of the trance-like state she was in. Her hearing also was quite bad the last six months or so. But basically other than that she was quite healthy until the last day and a half when she had a stroke.

Good morning, everyone!!

Caroline and BeSota....my heart goes out to both of you.

Like Shiraz, our Gigi started pacing since last week,  and her eye sight is going as well.  She did have thyroid problems, but blood test checked out okay last week.
I suspect that her sight and hearing are going as well.

Few weeks ago, we rescued a little pup on the freeway, brought him home...only to find out days later he was dying from Parvo.  So sad.

I will check the rescue sites to see if there's any Eskie pup for adoption.  Not to replace Gigi, but because of her, we simply adore the breed.

Have a nice one with your beloved little 'kids'.

I should have mentioned that Shiraz has also lost her hearing which adds to the difficulty.  It has been like this for about 4 months. My vet is diagnosing it as SARDS disease, but that is not a concrete diagnosis.

Hi Jazzie. Yes, our Sugar was diagnosed with dementia last year. She's about 15. The vet put her on Prescription Diet BD (B for Brain) and it did seem to help, at least at first. She exhibits many of the signs of dementia: pacing, staring as if in a trance, not responding to our voices, sleeping for much of day, etc. When I first started noticing these things, I said to my husband, "We're going down a different path with Sugar now," and it really feels like we have a very different dog. But, like you, we are as devoted to Sugar as she always has been to us, and are determined to care for her as lovingly as ever.

I also treasure every moment we have with her and my heart sings when she perks up, wants to run or tells me, at 5:30 every evening, that it's time for dinner.

Keep posting. It's good to hear from another eskie lover going through the same thing.

Good morning, Lise and everybody!!!

Indeed, it is so comforting knowing our Gigi's condition is not all alone.  Thanks you all so much.

Gigi started exhibiting her symtoms right after our beloved lab/collied suddenly died from Spleen Cancer 2 yrs ago.  (he was dumped in our yard on a frosty, cold day...Gigi alerted me that 'something' was in the yard).  Anhow, she is deterioating more this year.  She does pace, stare, trouble holding her bowel....she jumps in cirles when she is expecting food, or needs to go do her 'business' , her stomach clock ia slways on time. She also sleeps lots more than she used to..

She never leaves my sight and attach to me like a shadow.   She will always our Baby Gigi.

Oh, I read B-Choline is good for demantia.   Haven't yet gotten the prescripted diet.  Hopefully soon.

Have a great day with your beloved Eskie.

Gigi sendind all loving hugs.

We lost our dog of over 15 years only very recently and aren't ready yet for another one; however, we frequently check on on this website, not only in our own city/state, but also in nearby cities in other states.

We aren't sure if we are going to adopt an eskimo or if we will purchase  a puppy from a reputable breeder; either way, we presume it will be many months, sometime next year.

But I must say, we have found some BEAUTIFUL eskies at that specific site, and many are VERY inexpensive.

I don't know your location, but let me know if you need help finding your state/city and then search on ESKIMO, and.... voila!!!

http://www.easypetadoption.com/

It's amazing how many eskies are actually out there, and in the case of RE-homing many for only a very nominal price, if any.

Also, don't forget there are many independant Eskie rescuers like me, who rescue very adoptable Eskies in all age, size, ranges who can be a whole lot easier to work with them most others when it comes to adoptions. I wont ask in a home visit, what is your vets phone number, and then note if you know it by heart and if not, pull out a stopwatch and time you to see how long it takes you to get it? It's also not uncommon for me to invest 100's of dollars rescuing an Eskie and accept nothing in return from the right home. Hell, I even deliver within 300 miles of Chicago. If you don't belong to Facebook, I encourage you to and start making frineds with the other Eskie people. It's a whole new way to rescue Eskies.

Sorry about not being diligent checking on posting here.

I've been dealing with my own health issues lately...not to mention, wild fire that seems to be under control now except lots smoke in our mountain canyon still.

Anyhow, I'm on FB under 'jazziesassie'.  I will look up for other eskie lovers.

With Gigi, it has been touch and go...but she is a true fighter and still hanging on with all her might. and I'm doing my utmost to keep her as comfortable as I can.  Eskie, such a champ!!!.  I know she is living up to Eskie's precious reputation. Wink Happy Hershey Kiss

No special diet....I mix soft dog food and mixed with homemade chicken meal as she had problems with her teeth.

The other 'age' related problems are arthritis in her hips (which makes standing and walking a bit challenging for her), mild case of incontenence and bowel control.   No matter what, she always manage to stand up as if none of her problems are big deal.

She continues to fight, we continue each and every day that we're having her.

Happy Weekend. Hershey Kiss
