Welcome to the board, and sounds like Cody has a loving home to care for him.  I love the story of his adventures in his new home.  Sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun with him Big Grin Big Grin

Welcome!

I wouldn't take 1 husky as a gauge for how well he likes/dislikes other dogs.  From my experience Eskies and Huskies natuarlly rub eachother the wrong way.  My two love all other dogs except for my friend's husky, and her husky doesn't like them.  All three dogs adore the rottweiler she has.

I also have another friend whos parents have had eskies all their life and tried to bring in a husky and it tried to kill her eskies but was the sweetest dog ever when not around them.

Hi Dave!

One of my aunts and cousins live in Cherry Hill, and I grew up in Delran. I spent a lot of time at the Cherry Hill mall in my teenage years!

Hi Cindy,

I didn't grow up around here, but I do take my daughter to the mall now and again. It looks nice now that they finished remodeling.

Dave.

He hasn't been friendly to most of the dogs we've met on our walks, but I do want to try socializing him. We have a great dog park nearby where he could run around and play if he's good!

Are you talking about the Ocean County dog park? Although we used to take our one dog, Atka, there all the time before we got our 2nd dog, just bear in mind that the moderators at those parks will ban dogs and people (forever) if you strike out 3 times with bad behavior. There are strict rules at these parks (no food, no treats, no toys, pick up after your dog, always be mindful of him, etc.). It's a membership-only park, and you can get licenses and member cards right at the Toms River Mall at the County Connection "store" (so convenient since government hours don't coincide with people's free time!).

Like I mentioned, we used to go there quite a bit, until we kept on running into dogs who were a little too high energy and would get our dog wound up, only asking for trouble. The owners of these dogs weren't the most responsible, either, which compounded the problem. They were never really bad enough that they would have gotten warnings or suspensions by the moderator, but I was too uncomfortable with the possibility of a full blown attack when one of the lazier moderators was working - the kind who like to stay inside the hut and just watch TV and not pay attention to what was going on in the park. In addition, our 2nd dog has a liver problem that makes anesthesia pretty rough to tolerate for her, so we also didn't want to chance emergency surgery if she were to get attacked by a high-strung and frustrated dog whose only means of exercise was the dog park.

I'd think about some private classes with a trainer first to address any dog-dog issues so that you don't run the risk of being banned from a place that you could find enjoyable. Plus, a professional may be able to help you see if this is true dog-dog aggression, fear aggression, territory on a leash, or something else, and how to properly deal with whatever it is. Just a few of my thoughts on this....

Welcome to you and Cody! Love the description of him too! Sounds like a typical Eskie!

You may want to consider taking him to a daycare place to see how he does in that environment.  They will do an evaluation and take him back without you to see how he interacts with other dogs.  I would tell them that he is scared and ask if maybe he can be around smaller dogs at first.  Leo sounds like he was a lot like Cody in the beginning. He would bark and nip at dogs and was really uncomfortable when on leash and at his doggie classes. He was always more comfortable around smaller dogs though.  I took him to the dog park once as a puppy (well he was about 7mo) and he didn't want to have anything to do with it.  I really am not a fan of dog parks that aren't controlled anyway because you never know when a bad dog fight might happen.  Leo did well at daycare though and he has been going a few times a week since then! He still doesn't do so well on leash when he meets another dog, but I know that and just try to not stress him out with leash introductions.  (Usually I just let Cozzy say hi and keep him behind me or feed him treats to distract him.)

Love all the pictures and congratulations on Cody! He seems to be fitting in perfect with your family!

Thanks for all the kind words and advice!

The local dog park is actually in Medford, NJ. One of my neighbors takes his dog there all the time and loves it. I won't try taking Cody until we get him more comfortable around other dogs.

With the warmer weather, I've had to cut back on his walks a little, so we max out around 45 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night. With additional play time at home, he seems to be doing just fine. Once we get to 10:30pm or so he just lies around staring at me until I tell him it's time for bed, and then he curls up in his crate and conks out for 9 hours or so.
