Hi all, we rescued Cody from the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, NJ six weeks ago.

This foxy-faced furball has definitely made himself at home, and having read some posts here earlier, I can see that he is well versed in eskie lore. Things he already knows (perhaps from his previous owner):

* Shoes make for a tasty chew toy (at least they were an old pair).

* The kitchen cabinet containing the garbage can is easily opened with a nose nudge and a paw.

* When your humans move the garbage can behind the cabinet door with the child lock, you can still contort yourself enough to pull out the plate of orange peels.

* Squirrels are the enemy and humans must be alerted with loud barking whenever these intruders approach the home. If only there weren't so many of them living in the back yard!

* The wire leash can be snapped by chasing a squirrel at full speed.

* Poop sometimes makes a tasty snack.

* If you look expectantly at the small human, she will feed you snacks.

* If you poke the male human while he's reading, he will get up and see if you need to go out the back door to pee. Very entertaining, especially when you don't really need to go out at all.

* When your dumb human lets you out without a leash at dusk, it's fun to chase a squirrel, then jump in the creek to cool off. If you hadn't picked the stagnant pool of water you could have skipped the mudbath afterwards, but hey, it's all fun. Why go home when you're having a good time? There's a dog barking somewhere down the block, and now that you're covered in mud and invisible you can crash thru his back yard and make his human yell at you 'til you go away. Then you can come home and take a bath.

* Walks are fun. If the male human isn't moving fast enough for you to chase squirrels, you can always try pulling his arm out of its socket.

* Oh yeah, when you get hot on your walk and all the snow has melted, it's fun to lie down in a pool of muddy water, then get up and shake it all over your human.

* The only bad thing about walks is those other low-class dogs that have invaded the neighborhood. I let them know who's in charge by barking and trying to eat them if I get close enough.

Welcome, Dave and Cody!!  I see that Cody has your wrapped around his little paw already.  One thing to remember about the eskie is that you have to show them that you are the boss!  If you don't, he will take over the position.  But they are wonderful animals and are like Lay's Potato Chips - you can't just have one.  So BEWARE!!!!

And I can see that you have already found out that we just love pictures!!

Hah!  I'm still smiling from all of Cody's descriptions of his activities.  If you have put up with all of that in just a few weeks, I think he's found a forever home!

Looking forward to more stories!  And maybe some where the human prevails.  Big Grin

Well, I think Cody sounds like my mother used to call "a corker!"  A cutie, but a corker!!  You might want to look up the Nothing is Life is Free philosophy of dog-rearing!!!

Thanks, everyone!

He's a great dog. I saw him on Petfinder one day, and a couple of weeks later my wife said we should go look at dogs. My daughter has wanted a dog for a while now, and so have I. My wife had a Rat Terrier when we met, but he died six years ago, and since then we've just had a cat.

When we got to the shelter I really didn't think Cody would still be there, but he was. They said he'd been approved for adoption twice before and the people just never came back for him. He was found running loose not far from the Philadelphia Airport back in November, so he had been at the shelter for three months when we saw him.

My daughter saw two other dogs she liked, but neither were good with kids. Cody came out to see us and was great, very friendly and well behaved. I wanted a 'real' dog this time around. I had a mutt and a Westie when I was younger, and both dogs would go for a five mile walk every day. My wife's Rat Terrier would make it a block or too before collapsing, and that's not what I wanted.

So, we filled in the paperwork, and three long days later, I went to pick him up. Here he is getting ready for the ride home from the shelter:

And this was his first evening at home. We kept him on a leash for the first couple of days, as we had no idea how well he was housetrained:

Within a few days we had him trained to go outside when he needed to, and we trained him to sit/stay when his food bowl was filled. He learned that right away, and will wait for the ok to eat.

We went to Petco and got him a nice dog bed, which he has no use for whatsoever. My daughter now uses it when watching TV, and even for the occasional nap:

I took him to the dog park to let him run around, and that's when I figured out he doesn't like other dogs. There was nobody there at first, but then a guy showed up with a husky and Cody went for it. I had put him on the leash when I saw the other dog arrive, so no harm done. Here he is cooling off:

He really loved the snow. Here he is taking a nap outside after his walk one day:

He's a lot of fun when he wants to play, and we have a few chew toys to keep him busy:

And finally, Ciara trying to cover him in grass, which of course he shook off instantly:

Cute pictures!!  I love the one of your daughter in Cody's bed - adorable!!  Looks like Cody really has a good home.  It is good that you get him out and socialize him, especially with people.  Eskies can become very territorial if they are not properly socialized and then you will have to put them away when you do have company.  I am sure, with the kids around, that you will not have that problem as they will have friends over all the time.  Cody looks very happy!  I am glad that you were able to rescue him from the pound.

These pictures are so adorable.  Sounds like Cody has fit right in to your family!!  Hehe, my guys are the same way with their dog bed -- I didn't even bother to get a second one for the second dog because neither one lies in it...  Roll Eyes I love the picture of your daughter covering him with grass.  Big Grin

Thanks again, everyone!

He's playful today. I took him for a 3.5 mile walk in the rain and now he's flying around the house playing with me and his toys.

Hello from the Jersey Shore! Nice to see another Tpk/Parkway exit resident on here Wink

Cody is just Mr. Personality, huh? Sounds like NILIF might be a good thing to look into w/ him before he totally gets out of control - lol. Love the pic of your daughter sleeping in his bed - hilarious!

Welcome to the board Smile

Hi Dave!

One of my aunts and cousins live in Cherry Hill, and I grew up in Delran. I spent a lot of time at the Cherry Hill mall in my teenage years!
