Lately I've been noticing Shiraz slowing down (makes me sad). One thing that is standing out is that she is now drooling whenever there is food around. Is this part of the aging process? She never did this before. She has also taken a liking to eating cardboard, we have a box of stuff for starting fires. Now I have that set up high since she suddenly seems to think she needs to eat some every day. Do you think she is missing something in her diet?

If she is on the same diet now as what she has been on for the last year or more, it's highly unlikely that she is missing something in her diet. Excessive drooling is usually a sign of nausea. That can make them start to eat odd things too. How old is she now? When was the last time she had a dental? Sometimes a bad mouth can make them drool a lot too. I would advise a trip to the vet to find ot what is going on. She may need some bloodwork.

Poor Shiraz! I hope the vet can figure out what is wrong and that she feels better soon.

Shiraz will be 12 on Wednesday, I'm not sure this is a medical thing, I get mixed messages on the drooling, I have friends eskie's who have always drooled, this just started for Shiraz and it's only when there is food that she is staring down.

If it were my dog, it would still warrant a visit to the vet to discuss it and make sure there isn't something more going on, esp. since this is something she has never done before.

My Yuki used to drool when there was yummy food around. My sister's Pom drools whenever she is around food. My cat drools too whenever there is food for her.

Riley has always slobbered a little in anticipation of food. Lately I've noticed the quantity of drool seems to have increased quite a bit but not the frequency. He turned ten in September, so it's quite possible the change could be age-related. But I also agree with the others who advised having Shiraz checked out by a vet. It might be something involving her teeth or gums.

After reading the title "Drooling and Eating", I naturally assumed you were referring to some of us who are senior citizens. Then I noticed the cardboard in the text, and was flooded with relief. I may drool at age 78, but I definitely do not eat cardboard.
