I was going to modify something I posted, and I don't see the 'modify' option--am I looking right at it and not seeing it (which would mean that I am losing it)? Confused

The only thing I can think of is a) make sure you are logged in and b) make sure it is your post you are trying to modify, and not someone else's.

I was logged in and it was my post...sometimes I see the modify option and sometimes I don't.

That seems to be happening to my posts as well....it seems that there is a certain amount of time after I post that the "modify" button shows up and then it is gone.

Maybe Michael put a time limit on how long we are able to modify a post before it becomes permanent???

OK, so I'm not alone Smile  This morning I wanted to modify something right after I posted, and still didn't see the modify button.

*Now, this time I saw it--but it's not there on my earlier post in this thread.  And, again, I swear I've modified posts (in the past) quite a while after I posted them Confused     I'm starting to hear the music from the Twilight Zone Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Can you modify any of your posts in this thread?  It's been 2 1/2 hours since my last post in this thread, and I can't modify it now.  You're right, there must be some kind of time limit.

Yep. The edit button is no longer available after a certain period of time. Michael deactivated this option some time ago. If memory serves me right, it is no longer possible after 2hrs to modify your posts.

I think Michael told me sometime ago it was 1 hour.

Yes, the edit option was changed a few weeks back due to what I considered extensive abuse of the feature by someone, and under the circumstances I ended up just making the change immediately and not posting anything publicly about it at the time. The forum allows me to set the option to anything...including no ability to edit posts after they are made at all. I have always hated forums where I couldn't go back and edit something later on....especially something simple like a typo...within a reasonable timeframe. I've noticed that a 15 minute editing window seems to be common for a lot of forums, but I wanted to keep things as reasonable as possible. Since we've had minor issues with this feature in the past, it was something I had mulled over at times, but left the indefinite editing ability in place because I wanted that ability for members when it's practical and useful.

I figured I'd probably have to restrict the editing timeframe at some point, but it was only after a flagrant abuse of the option that I felt it had to be changed when it was. So, I chose a one hour editing window after posts are made. Which I feel is plenty of time to edit comments while the post/discussion is still fresh. Members can still reply further posts, etc. even after that timeframe, so if you did need to correct something that might be the way to do so. But if anyone feels something does absolutely *need* to be edited even after that timeframe, you can contact any moderator or myself and we can take a look at it. We'd only make the changes if it's absolutely vital to do so though, and most the time just an added reply with more details should suffice.

So, no, you're not losing it....and unfortunately under the circumstances I didn't feel it proper to post a public notice on the change at the time. The editing limit will be included in the revised rules and guidelines in the near future though, so that it will be easily known to everyone.

Thanks for clarifying Michael!  I really did think I was finally over the edge Wink  I guess I did some abusing of the feature--sometimes I type something and don't take the time to read before I hit the post button, then I'll go back and read it and gasp.

No, I don't think you were abusing the option....just going back and editing things for clarity (especially typos or grammatical issues) is totally fine in my book, and I'd personally like that to always be available, but this ends up being an all or none thing, so that's where the editing window comes into play. It's best to read your posts right after making them to check for clarity....as that is the time to do so.

I consider abuse being where something was intentionally changed later on to change the meaning or actual content of the post....especially after others have replied considerably to the thread already. This happening occasionally is not something I like, but have tolerated......but some things went way beyond that recently and that's why the restriction at this point.

But again, if anyone does want something edited after the one hour time frame, they can request it from myself or a moderator and we'll look into it. But hopefully that limit allows for any reasonable corrections that do happen.

This is good to know...I thought I had lost it when I couldn't go back and fix a typo that someone else caught and had to have Helene fix it for me. Thanks for the clarification Smile
